What´s the AOA?
 The Algarve Cancer Association (AOA) is a non-profit private organization of Social Solidarity that intends to continue organizing events to raise funds towards projects in the fight against cancer whilst providing support for cancer patients.
Projects of the A.O.A.
The Associação Oncológica do Algarve would like to remind you that this Association has been a main force at the forefront of the local fight against cancer for more than 10 years and can be credited with the following achievements:
- Breast Cancer Screening Programme –
A Mobile Unit was purchased in June 2005 with the funds gathered mainly through MAMAMARATONAS 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. This Unit will cover the whole of the Algarve area, performing mammograms to all women between the ages of 50 and 65, who are invited to do so through their respective health centers. This project – in conjunction with the Administração Regional de Saúde – ARS – (Regional Administration for Health) and the Universidade do Algarve – UALG – (University of the Algarve) – has started in September 2005 in the borough of Alcoutim and has already screened people in the boroughs of Castro Marim, Vila Real de Santo António, Tavira, Olhão, S. Brás de Alportel and is now working in the borough of Loulé until the 19th October. Albufeira borough will come next. - Radiotherapy Unit, in Faro –
This unit is operating since June 2006, treating all the patients in the Algarve area, who, up to now, had to travel to Lisbon for their radiotherapy treatment, thus avoiding costly, sometimes painful trips. - Support to cancer patients through:
counselling (at the AOA, either in Faro, or Portimão), hydrogymnastics (at Olhão), as well as providing patients with protheses and appropriate underwear & swimmer. - To create a Delegation in Portimão,
opening on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 16.pm to18.pm, to support oncological persons from Barlavento.This Delegação do Barlavento - A.O.A., is at Bairro da Cruz da Parteira (just in front of L´ECLERC), Fracção A - Bloco 2, 8500 – PORTIMÃO.
